I have followed this team since its inception and suffered through the initial lean years (still do today, actually). The Mets have always been my personal outlet over the years. The year, 1969, was extremely special to me as it helped me get though a tough year, personally. We were married the previous year, 1968, and were getting ourselkves establoshed. In Janualy 1969, I went to work, in Clifton, NJ, to find there was a picket line outside of the plant. I will not name the company but there business was the manufacture and installation of commercial burglar and fire alarm systems. The union was negotiating a new contract and decided to walk the line. To make a long story short, I submitted my resignation from the company in April of that year. I did find some part time work at our local bowling establishment and my spouse was also working part time. I then decided to take out a VA loan for computer programming school during that summer.
Needless to say, it was a tough year for us, financially, and extremely stressful. That team, the 1969 Mets, gave me the outlet I needed to get through that summer, with them surpassing the Chi Cubs and making it to the post season and eventually becoming World Champions.
I was able to sgare my story with a few of the Mets years later when I was fortunate enough to attend fantasy camp, most notable Ed Charles (R.I.P.), Ros Swoboda, John Stearns, and Howard Johnson.
I really hope to see a 50th anniversary celebration next season, if they have one and if I can get up there from Florida. I understand that some of them are not in good heath. As I am the same age as most of them, I can surely relate to that.
In closing, Thank you 1969 Mets for that great season and helping me get through that year retaining some sense of sanity and saving our marriage before it really got started, we recently celebrated our 50th anniversary.
